eBook di filosofia: A. Neimanis, Bodies of Water. Posthuman Feminist Phenomenology

Bodies of water

Astrida Neimanis, Bodies of Water. Posthuman Feminist Phenomenology

“Water is the element that, more than any other, ties human beings in to the world around them – from the oceans that surround us to the water that makes up most of our bodies. Exploring the cultural and philosophical implications of this fact, Bodies of Water develops an innovative new mode of posthuman feminist phenomenology that understands our bodies as being fundamentally part of the natural world and not separate from or privileged to it.

Building on the works by Luce Irigaray, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Gilles Deleuze, Astrida Neimanis’s book is a landmark study that brings a new feminist perspective to bear on ideas of embodiment and ecological ethics in the posthuman critical moment.”

eBook di filosofia: J. Nixon, Hannah Arendt and the Politics of Friendship

arendt

Jon Nixon, Hannah Arendt and the Politics of Friendship

“For Hannah Arendt, friendship had political relevance and importance. The essence of friendship, she believed, consisted in discourse, and it is only through discourse, she argued, that the world is rendered humane.

This book explores some of the key ideas in Hannah Arendt’s work through a study of four lifelong friendships – with Heinrich Blücher, Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers and Mary McCarthy. The book draws on correspondence from both sides, illuminating our understanding of the social contexts within which Arendt’s thinking developed and was clarified. It offers a cultural history of ideas: shedding light on two core ideas in Arendt – of ‘plurality’ and ‘promise’, and on how those particular ideas emerged through a particular set of relationships, at a significant moment in the history of the West.

This book offers an original and accessible ‘way in’ to Arendt’s work for students and scholars of politics, philosophy, intellectual history and literature”

eBook di filosofia: T. Jappy, Peirce’s Twenty-Eight Classes of Signs and the Philosophy of Representation Rhetoric, Interpretation and Hexadic Semiosis

Peirce1

Tony Jappy, Peirce’s Twenty-Eight Classes of Signs and the Philosophy of Representation Rhetoric, Interpretation and Hexadic Semiosis

The major principles and systems of C. S. Peirce’s ground-breaking theory of signs and signification are now generally well known. Less well known, however, is the fact that Peirce initially conceived these systems within a ’Philosophy of Representation’, his latter-day version of the traditional grammar, logic and rhetoric trivium. In this book, Tony Jappy traces the evolution of Peirce’s Philosophy of Representation project and examines the sign systems which came to supersede it.

Surveying the stages in Peirce’s break with this Philosophy of Representation from its beginnings in the mid-1860s to his final statements on signs between 1908 and 1911, this book draws out the essential theoretical differences between the earlier and later sign systems. Although the 1903 ten-class system has been extensively researched by scholars, this book is the first to exploit the untapped potential of the later six-element systems. Showing how these systems differ from the 1903 version, Peirce’s Twenty-Eight Classes of Signs and the Philosophy of Representation offers an innovative and valuable reinterpretation of Peirce’s thinking on signs and representation.

Exploring the potential of the later sign-systems that Peirce scholars have hitherto been reluctant to engage with and extending Peirce’s semiotic theory beyond the much canvassed systems of his Philosophy of Representation, this book will be essential reading for everyone working in the field of semiotics.”

Culinary Mind. Centre for the Philosophy of Food: il sito online del Centro dedicato alla filosofia del cibo

culinary food

Culinary Mind. Centre for the Philosophy of Food è il Centro di ricerca sulla filosofia del cibo creato nel 2017 presso l’Università di Milano.

” Public discourses on food, eating and cooking are everywhere, but what is missing is a philosophical perspective. On the other hand, academic philosophy has mostly ignored questions related to food and eating except as regards the ethical and political issues. Culinary Mind aims to fulfil these gaps by contributing to public discourses on food from the philosophical point of view, and by focusing on philosophical issues related to food from the point of view of metaphysics, philosophy of mind, language, perception, aesthetics, and epistemology.”

eBook di filosofia: M. A. Keeler, Discovering the Future in the Past. How C.S. Peirce’s 19th Century Ideas Challenge 21st Century Technology

Mary A. Keeler, Discovering the Future in the Past. How C.S. Peirce’s 19th Century Ideas Challenge 21st Century Technology

Versione preprint caricata dall’autrice in Research Gate

Here is an account of C.S. Peirce’s manuscript archive, how much is still unpublished, and how his ideas encourage us to improve access. We intend this volume to be a “handbook” for those who might join us in continuing to improve access to Peirce’s archive of manuscripts. In the first half (chapters 1-7), we attempt to collect and preserve essential historical records of what has been done to provide access to C.S. Peirce’s manuscripts, followed by examination of how current technology can be used to improve access to help us continue discovering and developing his ideas. The last half of the volume (chapters 8-14) offers incentive for continuing to improve access to Peirce’s unpublished late work, which challenges us to invent new technology to represent his ideas. As a whole, we intend this volume to serve as a handbook for comprehending and navigating Peirce’s archive, an effort that will continue to be essentially collaborative. For more detail on the history and condition of the Peirce papers, see André De Tienne’s “The Peirce Papers: How to Pick up Manuscripts That Fell to the Floor.” Also see Nathan Houser’s “The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Peirce Papers.”

eBook di filosofia: D. Gamez, Human and Machine Consciouness

Human and Machine Counsciouness
“Consciousness is widely perceived as one of the most fundamental, interesting and difficult problems of our time. However, we still know next to nothing about the relationship between consciousness and the brain and we can only speculate about the consciousness of animals and machines.

Human and Machine Consciousness presents a new foundation for the scientific study of consciousness. It sets out a bold interpretation of consciousness that neutralizes the philosophical problems and explains how we can make scientific predictions about the consciousness of animals, brain-damaged patients and machines.

Gamez interprets the scientific study of consciousness as a search for mathematical theories that map between measurements of consciousness and measurements of the physical world. We can use artificial intelligence to discover these theories and they could make accurate predictions about the consciousness of humans, animals and artificial systems. Human and Machine Consciousness also provides original insights into unusual conscious experiences, such as hallucinations, religious experiences and out-of-body states, and demonstrates how ‘designer’ states of consciousness could be created in the future.

Gamez explains difficult concepts in a clear way that closely engages with scientific research. His punchy, concise prose is packed with vivid examples, making it suitable for the educated general reader as well as philosophers and scientists. Problems are brought to life in colourful illustrations and a helpful summary is given at the end of each chapter. The endnotes provide detailed discussions of individual points and full references to the scientific and philosophical literature.”
