The Deleuze Seminars: i seminari di Deleuze in lingua inglese e francese

“Shortly after Deleuze’s death on 4 November 1995, one of his students, the musician Richard Pinhas, with the cooperation of Deleuze’s family (his wife Fanny, and children Julien and Émilie), created a website entitled WebDeleuze ( that was dedicated to Deleuze’s thought. The site not only initiated the project of transcribing Deleuze’s seminar lectures, but also included a wide range of resources and links for scholars interested in Deleuze’s work (including transcriptions of lectures by colleagues such as Félix Guattari, Jean-François Lyotard, André Scala; a complete bibliography of Deleuze’s writings by Timothy Murphy; scans of Deleuze’s manuscripts, etc.). The site was recently redesigned by Benoit Maurer and remains a valuable resource.

In 1999, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) (French National Library) in Paris, recognizing the importance of Deleuze’s work as a part of France’s national patrimony, established an audio archive of all the seminars Deleuze gave at the Université de Paris 8 between 1979 and 1987. The archive was based on cassette recordings that had been made by a Japanese student, Hidenobu Suzuki, who unfailingly sat in the seat next to Deleuze and recorded the seminars for almost ten years. The archive includes 273 cassettes of 180 separate lectures, comprising 413 hours of recordings. The BNF converted Suzuki’s cassette recordings into digital files and made them accessible online through the Gallica search engine ( A detailed summary of the holdings at the Bibliothèque Nationale has been published as a separate book by Frederic Astier, Les cours enregistrés de Gilles Deleuze, 1979-1987 (Mons, Belgium: Éditions Sils Maria, 2006).

Two years later, in 2001, a group of preeminent French scholars, initially headed by the philosopher Alain Badiou, constituted a not-for-profit organization entitled L’Assocation Siècle Deleuzien (The ‘Deleuzian Century’ Association) whose aim was to build on the work of the BNF and to produce written transcriptions of the seminar recordings that had been collected in the archive. The project took fourteen years to complete. The French transcriptions are freely available at a website called La Voix de Gilles Deleuze (The Voice of Gilles Deleuze), which is hosted and maintained by the University of Paris 8 (”

The paper aims to analyze the relationships between Gaston Bachelard’s thought and the psychiatric phenomenology worked out in the German-speaking countries from the 1920s. In particular, we question the link that is established between existential analysis and Rorschach Psychodiagnostic test in the field of Franco-German-speaking psychiatry after WWII. The intellectual and scientific exchanges that take place at the turn of the 1950s between French- and German-speaking psychiatrists and philosophers will guide our analysis to explain the specificity of the epistolary relations between Gaston Bachelard, Ludwig Binswanger and Roland Kuhn. Our study of the relations between psychopathology and phenomenology, centered on the Rorschach, will have both a historical and an epistemological character, insofar as we will show how the French- and German-speaking network that is historically constituted around the collaboration between psychiatrists and philosophers produces significant philosophical effects in the thought of the authors who serve us here as guides.

eBook di filosofia: The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham

Timothy  L. S. Sprigge ( a cura di), The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham (5 volumi)

“The first five volumes of the Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham contain over 1,300 letters written both to and from Bentham over a 50-year period, beginning in 1752 (aged three) with his earliest surviving letter to his grandmother, and ending in 1797 with correspondence concerning his attempts to set up a national scheme for the provision of poor relief. Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century. “

eBook di filosofia: M. A. Keeler, Discovering the Future in the Past. How C.S. Peirce’s 19th Century Ideas Challenge 21st Century Technology

Mary A. Keeler, Discovering the Future in the Past. How C.S. Peirce’s 19th Century Ideas Challenge 21st Century Technology

Versione preprint caricata dall’autrice in Research Gate

Here is an account of C.S. Peirce’s manuscript archive, how much is still unpublished, and how his ideas encourage us to improve access. We intend this volume to be a “handbook” for those who might join us in continuing to improve access to Peirce’s archive of manuscripts. In the first half (chapters 1-7), we attempt to collect and preserve essential historical records of what has been done to provide access to C.S. Peirce’s manuscripts, followed by examination of how current technology can be used to improve access to help us continue discovering and developing his ideas. The last half of the volume (chapters 8-14) offers incentive for continuing to improve access to Peirce’s unpublished late work, which challenges us to invent new technology to represent his ideas. As a whole, we intend this volume to serve as a handbook for comprehending and navigating Peirce’s archive, an effort that will continue to be essentially collaborative. For more detail on the history and condition of the Peirce papers, see André De Tienne’s “The Peirce Papers: How to Pick up Manuscripts That Fell to the Floor.” Also see Nathan Houser’s “The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Peirce Papers.”

Convinced as he was that thought is done in the making, and that the creativity of our minds is only deployed when the latter is endowed “with pencil and plenty of paper”, Peirce manipulated his own papers as a sort of laboratory of his philosophical and scientific ideas. The reductions of this extraordinary laboratory to printed versions (which is, of course, ineludible) inevitably entails a loss of philosophical complexity.

The project aims at making up for this loss. To this point a specific dimension of the project’s work is also related, which concerns in particular the philosophical and interpertive importance of the non-textual and figurative material that is contained in Peirce’s Nachlass. Peirce was famously convinced of the pivotal role of images (and their experimental manipulation) for the production of intellectual content. Relying on this conviction, he put forth a diagrammatic logical calculus that has gained worldwide recognition as the most powerful non-verbal formalization of thought ever proposed. Over and above this, however, his papers literally bristle with countless drawings of all kinds (from scientific illustrations to caricatures and doodles) which strongly call for systematic examination.

“A slider bar in the upper left controls the crossfading. By fully crossfading the transcript it can be viewed on its own. The manuscript page can additionally be shifted around the page with the mouse and smoothly zoomed in and out on with the mouse wheel. Further graphical transformations are available in the symbol menu in the above left. Run your cursor over the symbols to display an explanation of the various functions. In need of additional explanation are the project markers, which frame text passages including certain notes, drafts, or editions. The person marking lists the people appearing on the page and highlights them red in the transcript.”
